“The differences to explore were really fun. A lot of the Coruscant sets are domestic interiors. There is not much available off the shelf, so Rebecca had to design every piece of furniture. Syril’s (Kyle Soller) mother, Eedy’s apartment, is a good example, which in my mind was once a sought-after modern apartment in a newly built part of town, a high-rise with a modular interior with elements one could plug and play into the walls and upgrade. Syril, one of the most interesting characters in the show, grew up here under the thumb of Eedy his mother, but now the apartment is dated. It’s gone from crisp cream to Bakelite beige and has since been surpassed by other surrounding tower flats that have occluded the view to the sky. A view in my mind would definitely be a class issue in Coruscant.”

And now Syril! I’m interested to see how he navigates employment within the Bureau of Standards, and what that looks like; what does it take to be promoted? How does he rise up, and does that rise eventually come with a fall? I’m excited to see him move out of Eedy’s apartment and to see Eedy again, in general. So much of Syril’s story and fate feels open-ended, even though he’s technically an antagonist. I’m looking forward to seeing what direction he ultimately goes. If he’s on Ghorman for the Ghorman Massacre, what does that do to his “Imperial fanboy” mentality? At what point does he start working with Dedra after Ferrix, and when does he learn that the Dedra Meero he’s hopelessly in love with obsessed with and the actual, real-life Dedra Meero are two different people? Does that then push him to betray her? Does he ever join the ISB? Do he and Cassian meet again?!
more syril questions than i've ever thought to ask in all my life but i expect nothing less from you
tell me what you want/need to see in Andor season 2!

for the fanfic ask meme, could you please do A, N, and T?
(from @cheesenames but can't actually send asks from a sideblog)
answers to A and T here !
N: Any fic ideas brewing that you’d care to share?
One of these days I'm going to get to the fic where Luke and Leia get sent to Tatooine while their father is on trial for crimes against the Republic. An AU where Anakin didn't turn, but everyone takes one look at him and his crimes and goes....hmmm. Also known as the fic where Luke deals with this by getting really good at flying and kissing boys and Leia gets the depression.
The Orestia AU I'm marinating on will get to the public within 2-3 business years. lol.
And I'm going to write Peevy fic when the next season of Andor comes out! Or now. Depends. I'm just so interested in a young Eedy. It's so fun writing complicated and mean spirited people!!!!

Syril for the ask game if you haven’t had him already! 8, 12 and 16
8. Your favorite outfit of them
HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME CHOOSE?! Oh, god. There's a special place in my heart for his Preox-Morlana uniform, because it's so blue, and his eyes are so blue, and I fell into the trash can the second I saw him in it, and... yeah. Extremely well thought-out reasoning there, I know. Also, we don't talk about this outfit enough:
Tumblr media
HE LOOKED SO GOOD IN THAT VEST?????????? He looked so good in that vest. That's all.
12. Sexuality hc!
If I'm remembering right, bi Syril is canon-ish? I don't think Tony's ever commented on it, but Kyle mentioned something in an interview once.
With that said I think Syril has probably only dated women, and extremely sparingly. Like, I think he maybe went on a date, once, and it didn't go well, and he was left mildly scarred and confused by the whole thing. As a result, he never took an interest in finding love again until Dedra Meero rewired his brain.
16. A childhood headcanon
Most of my headcanons about Syril's childhood have come from larger fandom discussions I've seen, so this might be less my own idea and more concepts I've read and decided to adopt as true. At some point, someone (maybe you???) said Syril taught himself how to sew when he was younger so that he could tailor his own clothing and make himself appear higher-class than he and Eedy actually were. That's stuck with me, as has the possibility of Eedy being from Naboo (which I know you came up with, and I've accepted as canon until the show tells me otherwise).

thinking about black sun (2020) again (when am i not) and just awed by the way xiala's chapters set up serapio as this soft boy sheltered young innocent ingenue who knows not what he does for his tutors did brainwash him :( and then like 75% of the way through the book rebecca comes in with the you killed them didn't you. paadeh and eedi. and we're forced to confront what we've kind of known all along, that the version of serapio the readers have been directed to fall for has never existed. that man was guilty of at least two murders by the age of 16 and would have absolutely killed it (sorry) as the monster at the heart of a small town horror novel. and he kills everyone onboard and gets down on his knees and caresses xiala's hand to get her to take him to tova?? everyone in the book talks about the teek being scary mysterious temptresses and it's hilarious that xiala, resident siren, is so thoroughly sirened over the course of that book, femme fataled, y/a love interested if you will,

Does anyone want to hear my “Uncle Harlo is Syril’s real Dad” theory?
No? Too bad.
So to begin with, I don’t think Harlo is an uncle to Syril in the traditional sense. He’s not related to the Karns by blood or marriage. From Syril’s dialogue, he seems too distant to be a close relative, with Syril implying he won’t even remember who Eedy is
Tumblr media
I realise he’s also taking a jab at Eedy here, but even she reveals Harlo doesn’t keep in touch with them often (”he’ll respect me for having waited so long in asking and being so prudent about it.”)
We already know Syril has grown up without a Dad. If we go by the backstory Kyle Soller and Kathryn Hunter devised, Eedy’s husband left the family in an “acrimonious, horrible way” early on in Syril’s life.
Without her husband around, Eedy tries to frame Harlo as a replacement father figure for her son, giving him the title of “uncle”, emphasising how important his favour is and his supposed interest in Syril’s career:
Tumblr media
But to Syril, Harlo is just as absent as Mr. Karn. He doesn’t understand Syril’s career ambitions, he doesn’t make the effort to speak to Syril directly. As far as Syril’s concerned, he doesn’t know him at all:
Tumblr media
Which leads us to wonder, why does someone as influential as Harlo have this detached investment in a guy he barely knows? To a family he’s not particularly close to? What is this “family favour” Eedy is supposedly calling on?
Idk how gospel it is, but Kyle has said in interviews that Syril’s corporate security job was a handout just like his Bureau of Standards one. If uncle Harlo facilitated that position for Syril too, then surely the favour has already been called on?
And this is the basis of my theory: Syril is the child of an affair between Harlo and Eedy. Due to Harlo’s position (and Eedy being married at the time) it’s far too scandalous for him to acknowledge his son, so he keeps his distance. Whenever Eedy calls he lends a hand time and time again, out of a sense of obligation.
Of course, I don’t think Syril knows any of this. Eedy has always told him Harlo is an “old friend” and because they see so little of each other, he’s never questioned it. I do think Mr. Karn found out and that is why he walked out on the family (yes this sounds like a soap opera, but is Star Wars not just a soap opera in space??)
I don’t propose any of this will actually be revealed in season 2, but if it is, it could add some very sad context to the relationship between Eedy and Syril. Maybe that’s why she pushes him to succeed so much: so the Karns can prove themselves to people like Harlo who keep them in the shadows.
I doubt Andor is the type of show to reveal Harlo is actually some major Star Wars character we already know. But if there is any sort of twist coming with him, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something like this.

today’s mood is really hating having to study all these super old and complicated theories about what translating really is and how it’s supposed to be done when my go-to method of translating is just winging it, hoping for the best and somehow achieving okay results. but now i’m suddenly supposed to analyze what i’m doing and analyze other people and how they perceive texts and the world and i’m just like. uhh alrighty my brain did a thing i think. i don’t remember anything from when i translated it, i can see it’s good but i didn’t really like. think about anything or know why i did what i did. ehhhh don’t ask me about what i want other people to think about this text because it’s a user manual and i don’t care

Planning for Arknights banners sucks since the EN schedule is faster than CN and pretty much every event banner has at least one very good Operator on it. My main targets in the future are Thorns and Mountain, but how can one not be tempted by Surtr, Rosmontis/Mudrock, and Blemishine, not even including Operators who are already in the game who’ll be coming back on rate up.
I’m going to try to limit myself to the free rolls on W/eedy-Elysium, but Surtr and Mudrock are going to be tempting in the future.
Frankly for Thorns and Mountain I have little interest in the other Operators on their banners. At least Thorns has Jaye who I can possibly get to high Potential levels off of rolling, but otherwise? Eh. Andreana looks nice but I already don’t use my Provence (or my long-range Snipers either), I’d rather pull Ptilo or Nightingale than Silence, and I don’t really care about Pinecone or Kafka.

Great thoughts here! Yes, it was a long post already, but I could have easily included some thoughts on Syril who is very clearly traumatised in his own way. It’s just that we currently know so little about his background… other than what we see, in terms of the emotional abuse (I think we can probably call it that despite her possibly good intentions) from Eedy. I think it’s so interesting that Soller and Hunter came up with the story about Syril’s father abandoning the family in acrimonious circumstances when Syril was a child. Syril’s story is a kind of reverse mirror of Cassian’s in some ways, so it will be interesting to see if we get any more about this as his character develops in s2. I am so excited for his arc… I think it will be powerful.
The other person I suspect might have some severe trauma, deeply buried, is Luthen. Again, we currently know too little about him to be sure.
Yes, the immediate bounce back is very common in media … but I’m confident that Andor will buck this trend.
Some thoughts on the way trauma is dealt with in Andor season 1. Contains speculation about season 2 alongside a couple of spoiler-y quotes from Adria Arjona ( Empire magazine January 2025 issue).

Hi. My name is Jesper Fanø and I have created this Thumblr account to try and find and connect with others that may have some the same interests as me which is “International Law”.
Primarily in terms of enforcing maritime regulation through the United Nations Convention on the Law Of the Sea (#UNCLOS). Regulation adopted by the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO). In particular enforcement of the 0,5% sulphur limit of MARPOL Annex VI (also know as #IMO2020) which comes into force 1 January 2020.
I am also committed to exploring and developing the recognized international law principles of jus cogens, erga omnes and universal jurisdiction to be applicable to enforcement of a future regulatory prohibition on the use of fossil based marine fuels. A potential regulatory gamechanger in terms of reducing the release of GHG (especially CO2) to combat climate change.
I have written a book on these subjects called “Enforcing International Maritime Legislation on Air Pollution through UNCLOS” (Hart publishing and available at; https://www.bloomsburyprofessional.com/uk/enforcing-international-maritime-legislation-on-air-pollution-through-unclos-9781509927784/)
Now, that might sound like a really boring book, but let me tell you; this book puts the “Fun” in “UNCLOS” = “FUNCLOS”!!
Okay, that’s a lie. But, if you are a huge legal-nerd like me (or a cool legal-nerd) and interested in the law of the sea (UNCLOS) and enforcement of MARPOL Annex VI (IMO2020) and GHG regulations, well this book might be just the thing for you.
My “FUNCLOS”* book on UNCLOS (*Disclaimer, not a funny book)
My book (Enforcing International Maritime Legislation on Air Pollution through UNCLOS) analyses the amplified enforcement and notifying obligations of UNCLOS chapter XII placed on flag States, e.g. to sanction “effectively”, also in terms of sanctioning (fining) a violation of the 0,5% sulphur limit of MARPOL Annex VI. The broadened jurisdictions bestowed on port States and coastal States to enforce are also examined. Port State’s in terms of carrying out Port State Controls (PSC’s) and also enforcing emission-violations on the high seas, as well as the right for coastal States to enforce Annex VI within their waters, including in the EEZ and over ships making an innocent passage or transit passage is also studied as well as the possibility of using a drone to conduct a “hot pursuit”. Clarifying the overlapping jurisdictions between a port or coastal States and flag States are also resolved.
These theoretical discussions on jurisdiction are tied to practical applications pertaining to PSC-sanctioning in the form of detention and the imposing of fines. Something which I worked with for almost two years at the Danish Maritime Authority.
These conclusions on enforcement through UNCLOS are afterwards projected on to enforcement of other IMO legislation, including the other annexes of the MARPOL Convention, the Ballast Water Management Convention etc.
I have also, after coming to Maersk, worked with enforcement of the different proposed (short-, mid- and long-term) regulatory measure specified in the IMO’s initial GHG Strategy, such as revised EEDI, speed optimization, shore-power and the use of alternative fuels, etc., is also examined in context of UNCLOS.
The last part of the book offers – due to the increased environmental challenges relating to global warming and given the special legal status of ships – an analysis of whether an envisioned IMO regulation, in the future, could be considered the first environmental peremptory norm of a ‘jus cogens’ character within international law. The immense legal implications hereof (including enforcement erga omnes) are also addressed. It is primarily from teaching International Law for over six years that gave way for fusing the theoretical basis provided by the ILC (the UN’s International Law Commission) and the ICJ (International Court of Justice) with the practical implications from an envisioned global ban on the use of fossil based marine fuels, which presumably must be the final endgame of the IMO GHG Strategy.
I have also written an article on the enforcement of the MARPOL Annex VI 0,5% sulphur limit through UNCLOS in the legal publication; Review of European, Comparative & International Environmental Law (RECIEL).  The article is entitled; “Enforcement of the 2020 sulphur limit for marine fuels: Restrictions and possibilities for port States to impose fines under UNCLOS”.
  My Background
My book (and article) is the conclusion of a personal project which I have been working on for the last five years.
My journey began back in 2014 when I was employed at the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), working with implementing MARPOL Annex VI and the EU Sulphur Directive (entailing a 0,1% sulphur limit for most European waters) into Danish law. My work subsequently continued the following years with the enforcement of the 0,1% limit, in collaboration with the Danish Maritime Authority, Danish Attorney-General, the police and public prosecutors in a national sulphur enforcement task force.
2014 was also the year where I started teaching International Law at Copenhagen University, which includes law of the sea (i.e. the United Nations Convention on the Law Of the Sea (UNCLOS)), law of treaties, State responsibility and State jurisdiction in general.
It was through my work at the Danish EPA, and meetings in the enforcement task force, that I learned about many of the foreseen challenges regarding enforcement of the global 0,5 % limit (IMO2020) sulphur limit which comes into force on the 1st of January 2020 as stipulated in regulation 14 of MARPOL Annex VI.
Firstly, pertaining to detecting and proving violations. Secondly, relating to whether it would be possible to sanction a proven violation with a dissuasive fine.
The first part of this “enforcement-challenge” has since been the subject of much work as technologies (“sniffers” etc.) have been developed and refined to detect and measure sulphur emissions from ships. The IMO, it’s Member States and many organizations have also worked vigorously on ensuring that all relevant regulation (MARPOL Annex VI, IMO guidelines etc.) have been revised or developed to ensure the “consistent implementation” of the 0,5% sulphur limit to prevent any circumvention of the rules. This work includes, but is not limited to, matters relating to non-availability of compliant fuel (FONAR’s), fuel sampling and testing, Port State Control (PSC) and, in particular, the adoption of the so-called “carriage ban” banning the carriage of non-compliant fuel in any tank onboard.
However, my work, and thereby the book, relates to the second part of the enforcement challenge; How States on a national level can enforce violations of the 0,5% sulphur limit within the international jurisdictional frames provided for in UNCLOS. Frames that bind all States.
Or in other words… the focus of the book is on what comes after a violation of the 0,5% limit has been proven, i.e. after a sniffer has detected a violation, or after a PSC fuel sample (taken from any fuel tank) shows the use of non-compliant fuel, or after the next port of call rejects a FONAR, etc.
This is what my book attempts to clarify. “Enforcing International Maritime Legislation on Air Pollution through UNCLOS” is available at https://www.bloomsburyprofessional.com/uk/enforcing-international-maritime-legislation-on-air-pollution-through-unclos-9781509927784/.
  Other stuff
I am also passionate about the NFL, in particular the GreenBay Packers.
I am therefore also working on fusing me to interests; UNCLOS and the NFL….. This is however a work in progress….

16, 42, 44 for Syril?
16. Deepest darkest secret they won’t even admit to themselves
Honestly? For Syril, I think it's probably how badly he wants to be loved—not admired, not put on an Imperial pedestal, but loved. I don't think he's ever had that. Eedy probably loves him in her way, but her way is eternal nagging, and backhanded compliments, and "two meals a day," one of which is a bowl of cereal. On some level, I think Syril just wants someone to love him for who he is, and he wants to belong somewhere, and he's looking for all of it in the wrong place: the Empire.
42. 3 comfort items
Oooooooh, this is fun. Can one just be... Dedra? Not that she's an "item," obviously, but he became obsessed with her for a reason—he said himself that she restored his will to live, so I'd consider her or at least her memory comforting to him. (Much to her chagrin.) I wonder constantly about what's in that "private box" of his. Whatever's there, he cares enough about it to 1. Check on it while he's living at Eedy's and 2. Get annoyed that Eedy went through it. So, maybe that's the second comfort item; the mysterious private box. I'd also count those clone trooper figures as a comfort item of his. It's interesting that he didn't take them down when he moved home. He easily could've, but instead, he left them on display. I'm guessing the sight of them reminds him of where he wants to go (the Empire), and they, like Dedra, give him hope.
44. Their happiest memory
Even removing my shipper goggles, I think one of his happiest memories is saving Dedra on Ferrix. He'd been drifting aimlessly for so long after his own Ferrix disaster, facing failure after failure after failure, but when it counted, he... okay, he didn't succeed in catching Cassian, but he saved the woman he loves. (Even if it's an imbalanced, obsessive, and as-yet unrequited love.) I think that probably restored some of his faith in himself, and while it won't necessarily land him an instant job within the ISB, it will get him closer to Dedra. Showing that calmness and bravery during the riot was a major turning point for him, and I think he'd look back on that moment in the broom cupboard with fondness.
Send me a number and a character!

FULL MASTERLIST

Will she be able to save him before he falls into lunacy? In a world under the thumb of a mysterious woman, can they escape her? Or will Mrs Black have the last laugh?
Warnings: Violence

------------
"Edith!" A loud yell echoed through the castle-like house, drifting through every room, crevice and corner of the large house. Her sleek, black Louis Vuitton heels clicked against the rich mahogany floors. Pouting her lips, she began applying the bright red shaded lipstick over them, only stopping to call out to her beloved housemaid, "have you seen my Cartier diamonds?"
There was no response from the short, bubbly maid, "Edith?" She hollered again, rounding the corner from her en-suit to her master bedroom where she found the greying woman sat on the automann at the end of the plush bed, staring at the television. "Edith-"
"They're on your bed side table, Madame," She brushed off the young woman, ushering to the table behind her as if they were scraps rather than priceless diamonds. The brunette raised an eyebrow at the feisty maid but nonetheless sauntered over to the table and snatching up the sparkly objects and adjusting them to her ears.
"Eedie-"
"Madame hush!" The elder woman snapped at her mistress before raising a pale finger towards the screen, "look!" Instead of focusing on the abrupt snappiness of her beloved maid, the woman's dark brown eyes shifted to the tv screen in front of her, just as Edith turned up the volume more.
A balding, chubby middle-aged man stood in front of a podium talking straight into the camera, "-This city desperately needs experienced, seasoned leadership. And so, in their wisdom, they have persuaded me much against my will, to resume the office of mayor-"
"What city is this, Edith?" She questioned, finishing putting her earrings on and sitting down on the beds silk sheets.
"Gotham, Madame." Edith declared, knowing exactly how the city once and still affected the blue-eyed woman. And that it did, her blood ran cold at the very name, heart beating faster and goose bumps forming across her skin.
"Stop! This proceeding is a sham!" A voice rand from the crowd.
Immediately the previous mayor hollered for back up, "Security, remove this criminal!"
"Criminal? I was jailed illegally by a corrupt system! A corrupt system that was put into place by this man, who has the audacity to put himself back into the position that he brought so much shame and dishonour to," The camera panned to the proclaimed criminal and the two women gazed at the scrawny, pale, dark-haired man, he wore a dark suit and clung to a cane as he stood in front of the previous mayor.
"How dare you!"
"No, how dare you," He spoke, walking closer to the stage, hobbling slightly, "waltz up there and announce yourself mayor? The people demand to have a say into who will represent them, who will protect them!" The crowd cheered back at what the small man proclaimed, "It was I, I alone who drove out the monsters that plagued our city."
"Oh, please..." The older man huffed, his hand grasping at the podium.
The pale man spun around quickly and accusingly spoke, "Where were you then, while I faced peril at the hands of those abominations?"
"Sir, are you challenging James's appointment to office?" A reporter clads in red asked.
"I most certainly am," The crowd continued to jeer him on as he wobbled up on the stage, "to govern this city, one should be legally elected, which is why I, Oswald Cobblepot, announce my candidacy for the office of mayor." He claimed, finally allowing the two women to put a name to a face.
"And I demand, and the people demand, that an emergency election be held forthwith!" Oswald ordered, a smirk gracing his face as he smiled deviently at his competition. The crowd continued yelling and applauding, even going as far as chanting his name, Oswald Cobblepot smiled in delight. The television paused on his grinning red face, for some reason dark eyes could not tear themselves away from the pale man.
"Seems the longer you're away Madame, the madder that place gets," The maid spoke, placing the remote down and turning to stand in front of the girl she had watched grow into the beautiful woman she was today. Edith reached out, brushing away the tear that had cascaded from her brown eyes and landed on her cheek, "I know you miss it."
"I won't lie to you, Eddie," she smiled slightly, eyes drooping, "It's still home. I miss it,"
"But you were there not too long ago, Miss-"
"Four years ago is quite long," She claimed, remembering the single day she visited Gotham. A funeral wasn't the ideal time to visit the city she once called home, especially when the deaths were practically family. It wasn't as if there was anything interesting or particularly spectacular in the city in fact it was actually a kind of terrible place at times, but nevertheless it was still home. "The man said something about monsters, do you know anything about that?"
"No Madame, but from what I've recently seen from that city it seems everything there is somewhat monstrous," The old lady answered sharply, walking over to the gigantic casement windows surrounding the master bedroom and pulling the curtains over them.
"Even me?" She questioned, smiling lightly.
The old woman smiled warmly at the woman of the house, shuffling over and moving her hands up to her hair, brushing her slightly curled long brown locks from her face and behind her ears, "especially you, Madame," She giggled in return, "I wouldn't judge you if you wished to return,"
"Are you sure about that?"
"Home is home, I'm not one to judge what a person defines as home. My idea of home has been here for the past thirty years, not a place but with your family, Madame," The old woman looked deeply into her eyes, the two different shades contrasting each other. "Is it a visit we are about to pack for or permanent residency?"
The brunette stood from the bed, "just a visit, Edith. Maybe a weekend. I want to meet the man ridding monsters from where most are born," The young heiress smiled slightly, her conflict of feelings present on her face as she stared down the mayor in running, the man who claimed to defeat all the monsters and she wondered, 'could he defeat hers?'
"And what of the master, Madame?"
Of course, she thought of him, what kind of person would she be if she hadn't? He was everything to her, but this was something it seemed she would have to do alone, it wouldn't be safe and God if anything happened to him, life would not be worth living, "I'll go on my own, Edith."
"Very well, Madame," She spoke without question, knowing full well that Gotham was not the place for someone like him. She quickly hurried into the massive walk-in closet and reached for the "you should hurry. Mr Falcone doesn't like to be kept waiting."
"Indeed, he doesn't," The woman chuckled in reminiscence, "Call Calvin, tell him to arrange a dinner, I'll leave tomorrow afternoon." She ordered as her maid put the dark fur coat around her shoulders.
"Of course, Madame." Edith's voice echoed as the clicking of heels receded down the halls leaving the help in the gigantic, white room. The woman clad in white sauntered down the hall only stopping once she reached the tall white door left slightly ajar, a small glow of light trailing from the room. Tempted, she peaked inside, her eyes finding her greatest treasure, glittering gold and sparkling diamond. But she did not enter, only smiled at the features which she had known for so long on something completely separate from what it once was.
Mrs Black continued walking, passing so many staff and a thousand rooms and doors, wondering what she would find at the place she once called home. But was she ready to go back to Gotham?
Was Gotham ready for her?
